SMATCO original winch designs incorporate air friction clutches and band type brakes. These components have been time tested as highly reliable in a wide variety of rigorous applications in the industry.

For the second generation of anchor handling and towing requirements, SMATCO pioneered the "Discovery" series winches caliper disc brakes and clutches, providing many advantages over conventional clutches and brakes in today's deep water environments.
Every SMATCO winch is available in waterfall or side by side configuration, air or electric start and customer's choice of diesel engine and transmission manufacturer. Optional diamond screw level wind spooling devices are available.
Chain wildcats mounted on the drum shaft for handling rig chain are available. Units can be equipped with Parmac hydro brakes for dynamic braking during anchor handling and lowering operations.
